A project to construct an underwater cable to transport green energy from the Western Isles to southern Scotland and England is currently seeking funding from the European Investment Bank (EIB), according to the Scotsman.
The bank was tapped as a potential source of funding following its £100 million investment in NorNed, a cable project linking the Netherlands with Norway.
"This project is very similar to what we have been trying to get to link the Western Isles to the electricity markets down south," said Angus Campbell, vice-convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles council).
He added that the council "would welcome" a similar investment in the proposed Scottish project which, if approved, could carry more than 600 megawatts of electricity generated at a potential wind farm site in the Western Isles to the rest of the UK.
"If we are going to take advantage of the area's energy potential, we need a connection," Mr Campbell said.
According to joint operator Statnett, the NorNed cable has the capacity to carry 700 megawatts of electricity between Kvinesdal, Norway and Eemshaven in the Netherlands.
