ECA and HVCA (Heating and Ventilating Contractors' Association) are working together to provide training solutions for the M&E industry.
Developed in collaboration with Maitland QS, one of the UK's largest specialist Mechanical & Electrical Quantity Surveyors, this is an intensive technical course divided into 2 4-day blocks (8 days total. It is designed to provide the underpinning knowledge of M&E systems in buildings and Building Services measurement.

A course for experienced crafts-persons, supervisors, foremen, junior technicians /engineers/ contracts managers who wish to progress to a career as an M & E Quantity Surveyor
Objectives
At the end of the course, delegates will have the skills enabling them to:
- Identify particular building services, BSE systems and their main components
- Identify various M&E plant requirements
- Recognise BSE drawing/schematic symbols and follow BSE System schematics
- Identify and understand the principles of operation of typical renewable energy systems
- Effectively and accurately ‘take off’ from BSE system drawings and schematics, abstract, bill and substantiate to produce a fully substantiated variation
Course Content
Block 1: Building Services Technology
Day 1. Hot and cold water systems and heating
Day 2. Ventilation, air conditioning, sprinklers, dry risers and drainage
Day 3. Electrical distributionDay 4. Electrical containment, circuits, fire alarms and renewable energy
Block 2: Building Services Measurement
Day 1. Principles of measurement, methods of measurement and take-off
Day 2. Drawings, establishing scale, use of drawings and measurement exercises
Day 3. Measurement exercises of BSE systems and electrical measurement
Day 4. Electrical measurement exercise, the M&E engineer’s role, preparation and analysis of submissions
On-the job experience
To gain maximum advantage from this course it is very important that delegates are employed in a QS role either on-site or in an office environment.This will enable successful delegates to apply their newfound knowledge and practice the new commercial skills gained from the course.Ideally the employer should appoint a supervisor or mentor from within their commercial or contracts team to develop structured relevant work experience and review progress.This will ensure that the employer enjoys maximum advantage and benefit from their investment in training.
