BEAMA ENDORSES GREEN ALLIANCE’S NEW ‘TEACHING HOMES TO BE GREEN’ REPORT

2007-11-21

BEAMA director Dr Howard Porter has fully endorsed the sentiment and views expressed in the Green Alliance’s new report–‘Teaching homes to be green – Smart homes and the environment’.

Speaking at the report’s launch (Royal Society, 20 November ’07),attended by keynote speaker Stephen Timms MP, Minister of State for Competitiveness, Dr Porter said:
“Smart Homes tend to be associated with leading edge technology rather than their environmental benefits.  But, Smart Homes have much to offer and this report rightly explores this much-neglected aspect.
“Homes account for a significant 27 per cent of the UK’s carbon emissions so it’s essential that new ways to reduce this environmental impact are seriously considered.
”This Green Alliance Report will further communicate the concept of Smart products, and the technology involved, plus create more awareness of their undoubted impact in UK homes. Key elements supported by the Minister in his address.”
BEAMA’s Smart Housing Group has been actively communicating the benefits of investing in Smart products, and contributed to the report, which provides an overview of Smart features - particularly their environmental benefits and potential to contribute to carbon reduction targets.
Also, the report makes recommendations to Government and industry on maximising the potential of emerging technologies.  Proposals included cover commitment to roll-out of Smart meters to homes within 10 years, harnessing the CERT (Carbon Emission Reduction Target) programme to test Smart technologies and increasing understanding, and awareness, of the evidence base for the benefits of Smart features.
