Question: We are constantly having to replace compact fluorescent lamps ( CFLs) because of premature failure. The lamps that are more prone to failure are the ones fitted 'the proper way up', that is, with the bayonet at the top, whereas lamps installed with the cap at the bottom appear to be fairing slightly better. The lamps are running approximately 12 hours / day and should last more than a couple of weeks. This makes a bit of a mockery of the 40 lumens/W regulations, as it is creating far more toxic waste and CO2 than simply using GLS lamps (which, incidentally are lasting longer than these CFLs).
Have you any suggestions as to why these lamps are failing at an alarming rate?
Answer: It would help if you can specify the wattage and the type of CFL you are talking about. It is not possible to comment on the reason for early failure without actually inspecting the lamp.
However, if these lamps are failing within weeks then you should take them back to your supplier. I am not aware of any batch problems with our lamps other than in a very small number of isolated cases. If they are OSRAM branded, then your supplier should forward them directly to us.
Most of the Osram branded CFLs are suitable for universal burning position.
