Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This one, regarding Part P of the Building Regulations and outside circuits, is answered by the ECA:

| The garden is a 'Special Location'. |
| MK's MasterSeal weatherproof socket. |
Question: A customer has asked me to fit an outside socket in his garden to an existing SWA cable that appears to be buried correctly, but is not accessible. The cable is protected by an RCD.
Am I required to certify and notify this work (I am Part P registered), bearing in mind that I have not installed the circuit, but am just connecting a weatherproof socket? I understand that I should not certify someone else's work. Please advise.
Answer: The garden is a Special Location, so any alteration - such as fitting a socket - is notifiable. Make it clear on your Minor Works certificate that you have only connected the socket and not installed the cable.
