A Day in the Life of...An Electrical Wholesaler Branch Assistant

Born in Seven Oaks and raised in Manchester, Geoff Hood worked as a machine operator for Nokia for over sixteen years, but after being made redundant found work as a driver for a plastics company in Camberley.  “They liked the fact somebody turned up in the mornings,” said Geoff, who somehow manages to enjoy working hard during the wee hours of the morning.  After two years with the plastics company, he was headhunted by his next-door neighbours, leading electrical wholesaler Wilts.  Three years later, Geoff is a valued member of the Wilts team, working on the trade counter, in the warehouse, and even as a driver.

5:30am: Geoff is an early bird, getting up before the crack of dawn…naturally!!!  “I’ve been getting up this early since the mid-80’s,” said Geoff.  “I couldn’t change my habits if I tried.”
6:00am: Geoff and his missus enjoy their coffee and cornflakes together.
6:30am: After dropping his wife Susan off at work, Geoff drives to work.  He is usually the first one there.
7:00am: Geoff opens up the branch.  “I turn the alarm off and let the customers that are really keen in.”  Geoff then serves the early bird customers.  When he gets a chance, he picks and bundles products from the warehouse for customer order requests.
7:30am: A truck from Dimplex arrives and drops off heaters and bricks.  Geoff helps unload the merchandise and continues to serve customers at the trade counter in between.
9:30am: Geoff heads to Fleet and Farnborough to deliver some urgently ordered items.
11:00am:

Geoff is back at Wilts and is just in time to help unload a delivery of power poles.

11:30pm: After sorting though a bunch of lamp orders sent in from Wilts’ distribution centre in Trowbridge, Geoff scours the warehouse to pick the requested products.
12:30pm: There is another rush of customers at the trade counter.  Geoff puts his stock picking aside and serves them with a smile.  When they ask him why a camera is following him, he jokingly tells them it is for a Wilts calendar.  “I’m December,” said Geoff. “Because by then you would be sick of it.”
1:30pm: After the rush subsides, Geoff sorts out customer receipts so that they can be filed and dealt with by accounts.
2:00pm: Geoff takes a quick break (too short to be considered a lunch) to fuel up on very tasty mini cheese filled sausages.  He then heads back to the warehouse to operate a forklift where he unloads Legrand products from a truck.
2:45pm: Geoff goes back to the trade counter to help customers when another delivery arrives.  After finishing up with his customers, he gets back on the forklift and unloads a delivery from Cooper Lighting and Security.
3:30pm: After some more stock picking (for both customers and to clean the warehouse of older stock), Geoff does an afternoon drop and delivers cables to a client.
5:00pm: Geoff’s work day has come to an end.  He looks forward to seeing his wife, Susan, and having his tea “after only a bag of sausages.”  And after a fine chicken curry meal, Geoff will relax with his lovely wife and watch Dr. Who reruns.
