Question: I am rewiring a detached property. Because of various additions / extensions, I am unable bond to within 600mm of the incoming rising water main without causing substantial disruption to a fully-tiled bathroom.
I can bond approximately 2 - 3m from the recommended position, but after one tee off from the main. Is it permissible to make the bond at this latter position, and if so, how should such a deviation be recorded?
Answer: Regulation 547-02-02 mentions that the connection shall be as near as practicable to the point of entry of that service to the premises, and that where there is an insulating section, that it be made to the hard metal pipework and before any branch pipework.
Connection within 600mm relates to where a meter is installed. The bond connection would also need to be accessible for inspection, test and maintenance purposes. From your description you are obviously aware of this - I would think that the proviso 'as near as practicable' becomes valid and your planned point of connection is satisfactory, but where to record this as a deviation? I would suggest that the most appropriate place is in the Electrical Installation Certificate, on the 1st page, under signatures for design, construction and inspection and test. There, a space for recording details of departures is provided.
