Question: Can any body clarify the requirements for the location of an isolator for plant equipment. I have always installed an isolator adjacent to the piece of equipment concerned. The regulations state that the means of isolation must be located as near as practicable to the origin of the installation; in this case, the isolator should be adjacent to the equipment it controls unless the requirements for remote action are satisfied. Is that so?

Answer: The means of isolation should be placed for ready operation, but does not have to be local to the equipment. If not local it must be suitably identified and able to be secured in the off position, preferably by locking (eg: using a padlock and removing the key).
