Award-winning training centre Clarkson Evans begins the process of gaining approval to deliver EAL's new range of electrical qualifications for the 17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations (BS7671)

An award winning company has become the first training centre in the country to begin the process of gaining approval to deliver EAL’s new Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQs), designed to support the 17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations (BS7671).

Clarkson Evans, based in Gloucester, was quick to seek status as an EAL approved centre so that it can continue to offer its customers the first class level of choice and service which they have grown to expect.

First established in 1981, the company specialises in wiring new homes.  To increase the flow of suitably qualified electricians, Clarkson Evans developed its own training centre in 1998. Since then its training division has gone from strength to strength and now teaches around 900 people each year, ranging from apprentices to electricians with years of experience.

And although Clarkson Evans continues to specialise in installing complete electrical wiring systems in as many as 7500 brand new homes every year, it has also carved out a reputation as one of the UK’s leading electrical training specialists.

EAL is delighted that Clarkson Evans are among the first training organisations to seek approval for delivery of the new suite of vocational qualifications from January 2008 onwards. The finished package includes four new qualifications, including a 17th Edition Update VRQ to deal with changes to the existing set of standards and a 17th Edition Full VRQ to provide the necessary training for those returning to the trade.

The content has been developed through close consultation with SummitSkills, the Sector Skills Council, along with key organisations such as the ECA and NICEIC. The Joint Industry Board has also been kept fully informed throughout the development process.

The news of Clarkson Evans’ involvement co-incided with a series of nationwide launch events, organised by EAL, to make sure that colleges, training providers and employers have the right knowledge and information about the qualifications and to avoid crossed wires when it comes to their delivery.

Starting off in York on 25th September and culminating in Bristol on 4 October, the events have attracted over 150 people.  As well as receiving a presentation by EAL’s senior project leader, Greer Thomson, delegates were able to gain personal advice from a range of EAL representatives from various sections of the organisation, including business development, online services, centre approval and external verification.  And as well as receiving sample units of the new qualifications, the online service system was also put into action so that people could gain an understanding of how it can support the registration, certification and the examination process.

According to Gerald Crittle, Training director, Clarkson Evans, approval by EAL to deliver the new qualifications will add a further string to the company’s training bow.  He said:  “Because of our fairly unique position as a private contractor and training centre for electrical installation work, we have very close links with industry. The initial feedback from our customers indicates that they are thrilled to be given a choice of high quality training options to help them increase the skills and expertise of their workforce.”

EAL managing director, Ann Watson, also commented:  “EAL have been working extremely hard to make sure that the qualifications are of the highest standards and are fit for purpose. Clarkson Evans has a first class reputation in the electrical industry and we are delighted that they will be playing a pivotal role in providing the right skills for new entrants and existing electricians.”
