The new Scottish Construction Centre (SCC) was officially launched at the Parliament building at Holyrood, yesterday evening.

The SCC has been established with initial funding from Scottish Enterprise, in response to the recent industry consultations and report which included a recommendation to establish a centre that would concentrate on improving the performance of the Scottish construction industry through increased innovation and the sharing of best practice. The SCC will work closely with the Scottish Construction Forum which focuses on providing strategic advice to the industry, the Scottish Government and the Scottish Parliament.

Addressing delegates at the launch, Minister for Schools and Skills, Maureen Watt MSP, said: "I was pleased to have the opportunity to launch the Scottish Construction Centre. Skills development is high on the Scottish Government's agenda and I am delighted to acknowledge that the Scottish Construction Forum and industry as a whole share our ambitions.

"This new Centre has a real opportunity to promote innovation and excellence and improve productivity and performance in Scotland's construction industry, enabling the industry to grow, promoting best practice and sharing success and I wish the Scottish Construction Centre every success in meeting its aims."

In a short presentation that followed, Dr Tim Broyd, SCC Centre Director

added: "By acting on the real needs of the Scottish construction sector and by focusing on issues it can really affect, the SCC can achieve a measurable and positive impact in facilitating improvement in the performance of the Scottish construction industry."

Initial progress from The SCC includes the establishment of four regional 'nodes' in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow, the creation of a 'one-door' technical helpline for the industry and the development of the SCC KPI framework.
