The Institution of Lighting Engineers (ILE) is to hold a lighting design course entitled 'New Approaches to Workplace Lighting: an Introduction'. This new, introductory, one-day educational course will cover the major lighting design principles and concepts involved in modern office and other workplace lighting:

The course is suitable for sales staff working for lighting manufacturers and distributors and all those involved in the design or management of office interiors, with little or no lighting knowledge, such as architects, interior designers and facilities managers.
The philosophy of this new ILE course will be based on:
- The latest lighting research in Europe and the USA into theoptical system and design strategies for visual comfort and performance.
- An analysis of good practice techniques.

What will the course include?
- A review of visual examples of good and bad office lighting schemes, which will be used as the basis of class discussion throughout the day.
- An explanation of the interior lighting design matrix, as used by the Bartlett School of Architecture, as a method for design.
- Summaries of the main advisory Codes and regulations, including LG7 and Part L, and guidance on designing tomeet their requirements in innovative, visually interesting ways.
- A specific session on lighting design for the ageing workforce, one of the key issues facing office lighting in the next few years.
- A creative workshop session, in which groups of students will develop their own lighting designs for a given office space, for discussion and review.
The day will conclude with a light-hearted quiz on the contents of the day to test how much students have taken in - a prize is on offer for the winning team.
although the first of these new courses took place on March 20 at the ILE's HQ at Regent House, Regent Place, Rugby CV21 2PN. Subject to demand, the ILE was hoping a similar one-day events in the autumn of this year.
The price is £150 (plus 17.5% VAT), including lunch.
