Leeds College of Technology is holding a series of City & Guilds and other electrical courses on a variety of topics, but it running short of essential electrical equipment. Can electrical manufacturers or others help?

Courses that Leeds College of Technology is running include:

  • City & Guilds 2330 Level 2 Electrotechnical.
  • City & Guilds 2330 Level 3 Electrotechnical.
  • City & Guilds 2381 Level 3 16th Edition Regulations.
  • City & Guilds 2377 Portable Appliance Testing (PAT).
  • City & Guilds 2391 Testing & Certification.
  • E.A.L. Performing Engineering Operations NVQ Level 1.
  • BTEC HNC Building Services.

All together, the college has around 1100 students each year, the vast majority of whom are doing the City & Guilds 2330 qualification. They range from unemployed school leavers and apprentices to 50 year olds wanting to up-skill.

The 2330 qualification at Level 2 involves 50% practical (installing) and 50% theory. At Level 3, about 70% is theory and 30% practical (testing).

The college uses a wide range of electrical equipment in the workshop for practical activities, including insulation resistance/continuity meters at Level 2, and full 16th Edition testers at Level 3. Equipment also used includes: consumer units (5-way metalclad); MCBs (Wylex NSB6/16/32); Cable (6491X, 6241Y, 6242Y, 6243Y, SWA, MIMS, 2- & 3-core flex), two-way switches; batten lampholders; pendant drops; 1-gang & 2-gang PVC boxes; socket outlets; PVC conduit (20mm); steel conduit (20mm galvanised); 13A plug tops; BS4343 16A plugs; 100mm galvanised tray and 50mm x 50mm galvanised trunking.

The College terms the list above as 'consumerbles' - most equipment is used a few times, then thrown away because such components are designed to be fitted once, not fitted - removed - fitted - removed etc, so there are problems with screws and other parts wearing out. Further, students often build 'rigs' for visual inspection and testing purposes, for which similar equipment is used so as to simulate a 'real world' test. Therefore, Leeds College of Technology is asking for donations of any kind of switchgear (single phase- and 3-phase), as it does not have enough such equipment.

The college would be very grateful for any donations/sponsorship. It would gladly display 'sponsored by...' type notices and/or company logos, especially as its classrooms, corridors and workshops would benefit from relevant posters and displays.

College funding is often poor when compared to schools and Universities, and Leeds College of Technology's vocational specialism is an expensive one. This is why the college is asking manufacturers of electrical equipment if they would like to help. In doing so, this should help donating manufacturers get their products better known to the next generation of electrical installers, who will be better trained as a result.
