The NICEIC forges ahead to get 50,000 contractors compliant with proposed Electrical Safety regulations 
Monday 12 May 2003 Electrical safety in dwellings has been under scrutiny since the Government issued a consultation document proposing to introduce electrical safety as a legal requirement within the Building Regulations. Following their preliminary analysis of the consultation responses, the Government has stated that 'positive progress is possible, and they are looking to the electrical contracting industry to press ahead with developing competent firms schemes ahead of legislation. The National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting NICEIC is already working towards this goal. It is setting up an electrical safety advisory committee to plan the roll out of an assessment and self-certification scheme that will operate as a subsidiary to the existing NICEIC Approved Contractor Scheme.

Government gives go ahead for Part P 
In a written statement on 15 July, Phil Hope, Minister at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, confirmed the Governments intention to introduce tough new controls on the standard of electrical installation work in homes in England and Wales. This will be achieved by bringing electrical safety within the scope of the Building Regulations (as a new Part P), as soon as suitable competent person schemes are in place.
In the interests of consumer safety, the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC) welcomes the Governments intention to introduce tougher controls in the industry.
