A further 69 Housing Executive tenants in the Donegall Pass area of South Belfast are getting brand new kitchens as part of an improvement scheme costing almost £300,000. This is the 2nd phase of a Kitchen Replacement Strategy for the area; the first phase has just been completed at a cost of almost £300,000.

The homes were built between 1981 and 1991 and are a mixture of houses, flats and bungalows. As part of the current scheme the kitchen layout will be improved to provide additional space for kitchen appliances and tenants will be able to select their new kitchen units and work tops from a range of colours and finishes. Electrical and plumbing installations will be upgraded and new floor covering and mechanical extract fans will be provided. The Housing Executive is also taking the opportunity to upgrade or provide new smoke alarms in the homes.

Liam Kinney, the Housing Executive's South Belfast District Manager was delighted that the scheme was about to get underway and said:

"The Donegall Pass remains a popular area to live and the Housing Executive is committed to providing tenants in the area with high quality homes. This further kitchen replacement scheme will complement previous improvements carried out in the area which have included the provision of gas central heating in all homes. In-depth consultation has been carried out by local staff in the run up to the scheme and we will continue to liaise with tenants and their representatives to ensure that work progresses with the minimum of disruption for those involved."

Community representative Harry Todd also welcomed the news and added:

"Any investment in the Donegall Pass area is welcome and I'm sure the tenants involved in this scheme are delighted with the Housing Executive's plans to provide them with new, more modern kitchens."

Robert Morton is one of the tenants to benefit and commented:

"I'm thrilled to be getting a new kitchen especially as I have been able to choose the colour of the units and worktop myself - the improved layout and extra plugs will make all the difference to me.

I have to say that staff in the South Belfast District Office staff have been very helpful, particularly my Housing Officer, Karen Carlin - It's great to have one person that I can speak to if I need to know anything about the scheme."
