Abacus, the leading provider of billing products and managed services for the telecommunications and utilities industries, has announced its entry as member of the European Smart Metering Alliance (ESMA):

The aims of the Alliance are to define and promote best practice in smart metering across Europe.

Abacus is a developer and provider of smart meter billing technology. This allows the provision of more accurate billing services through utility meters that are able to provide accurate daily usage patterns, thus curtailing energy wastage and carbon footprints.

Abacus CEO Karl Willis said: "We are very excited about working as part of the Alliance. Harnessing technology that allows energy consumption to be monitored and managed is understandably top of political and environmental agendas".

Launched by the British Electrotechnical and Allied Manufacturers' Association (BEAMA), the ESMA project is designed to build and expand upon the environmental benefits of the Energy End-Use Efficiency and Energy Services Directive (ESD).

"By 2008, all European Member States have to implement the ESD, which requires customers to be given more information on their energy usage and receive more timely and accurate billing", commented BEAMA's alliance project leader John Parsons.
