Working together to raise charity awareness

2007-08-07
EEIBA

In a new collaborative project called Benevolence Today (www.benevolencetoday.org) our industry charity EEIBA, has joined forces with over 25 other occupational charities to promote the role of benevolence in the 21st century.

The aims of the project are simple: to raise awareness and understanding of benevolence, to encourage more people in need to apply for support, and to increase efficiency across the sector by referring applicants to the best sources of help.

This project came to fruition when the occupational charities compared notes on how to promote additional help for individuals in need. They realised that they would be much more effective in raising their profiles by pooling resources towards a mutual aim.

One of the key priorities of Benevolence Today is to establish good links with advice-giving organisations, such as the Citizens Advice Bureau and Money Advice Centres who point individuals in need towards the grant-making charities who can offer help.

EEIBA helps many people every year, but the charity is able to help more than currently apply, so it wants to extend its reach particularly in areas that it has not traditionally supported over the last hundred years.

For example, 73% of the charity’s welfare expenditure goes to people and their families who have worked in electrical manufacturing and supply, 4% to electrical and electronic retailing and 16% to electrical contracting and wholesaling. But there are many people who work or have worked in other areas that fall within the reach of the charity, particularly in the electronics and mechanical engineering sectors, who are either just too proud, or do not realise that EEIBA can support them.

So if you know of anyone who for whatever reason has fallen upon difficult times, please get them to make contact by calling the EEIBA Help Line on 020 8673 0131.

· EEIBA keeps costs down by using voluntary welfare visitors who give their time free

· EEIBA receives assistance from other charities and industry benevolent funds that saves £175K

· People from the industries EEIBA supports come to the charity for help
