ECA Edmundson Apprentice of the Year 2007 announced in award ceremony.
An electrical apprentice from Buckhurst Hill in Essex has beaten off stiff competition from across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to win the title of 'ECA Edmundson Apprentice of the Year'.
Alex Macnair, who is 23 and works for Trilectric Ltd in Eastcote, Middlesex and studies at City of Westminster College, fought off hundreds of other hopefuls in one of the UK's most prestigious, electrical industry competitions.
The Apprentice of the Year award recognises and rewards apprentices that have attained a high standard of academic and technical competence within the electrical industry, and is presented every year by Edmundson Electrical, in conjunction with the Electrical Contractors' Association (ECA).
Alex was presented with his prize, a cheque for £1,000, at a special ceremony hosted by Douglas McNair, managing director of Edmundson Electrical, at the Tara Copthorne Hotel in Kensington. Part of Alex's prize will also be a study trip to Dubai sponsored by MK Electrical.
To be short listed Alex had first to gain a high-grade result in the City & Guilds examination for electrical work, and a mark above 95 percent in the industry skills test. He then faced a regional interview, and subsequently was one of only eight candidates from all over the UK selected to appear in front of a final judging panel.
Douglas McNair, managing director of Edmundson Electrical, commented: "To win the ECA Edmundson Young Apprentice of the Year Award is considered an outstanding achievement in the electrical industry. Alex earned great respect from the judges who praised the exceptional standard he has achieved so early in his career."
Jeff Harrison, director of Trilectric, who nominated Alex for his award believes his success is well deserved: "Alex has been an outstanding apprentice ever since he joined us four years ago. He is a very fast learner with great self confidence and has an undoubted future in the electrical industry."
During his apprenticeship Alex has been working at the Royal Institution of Great Britain where it is widely believed that Faraday first discovered electricity.
Jeff Harrison added: "I think it's very fitting that Alex should be recognised for his outstanding work in a building regarded as the electrician's spiritual home."
Commenting on his win Alex said: "I am really pleased to have been chosen as this year's winner. It's great to have been rewarded for my time on my apprenticeship, especially as I've loved every minute of it.
"Training has been good fun as I'm a very hands-on person and my work with Trilectric has allowed me to put into practice virtually all the elements of my course."
Alex plans to continue his studies by taking an HNC to gain his technician's certificate.
