There's now a fair amount of 17th Edition blogging out there in the WWW. Some of the information so provided is accurate, some much less so.

In Barnschop's Life,
http://barnschop.blogspot.com/2007/06/electricity-at-work-regulations-eawr.html, the blogger talks mainly about the Electricity At Work Regulations (EAWR) and how, despite the fact that they came into force many years ago, 'it would appear that many people are unaware of their duties under the act'. He goes on to say: 'In a normal court of law a person is considered innocent unless the prosecution can prove guilt.

With Health and Safety issues, a person is guilty until they prove themselves innocent. At college one particular lecturer would constantly remind us that if someone died we could be doing a stretch of 10 years for manslaughter if proven guilty'.

He points out that the EAWR is a statutory document, written law, so that contravening it means that prosecution is likely. He also mentions both the 16th and 17th Editions of the IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) in context, saying that: 'BS7671 is written to go some way to actually offering practical advice in how to comply with the EAWR. If you follow the regulations set out in BS 7671 then you are less likely to find yourself in court for breaching the EAWR'.

Do VoltiBLOG users wish to comment on this, and any other 17th Edition blogs out there? If so, we'd like to hear from you.

17th Edition - bathroom discussions

The 17th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671:2008), due for implementation in June 2008, is currently undergoing its 'committee stage', where the various interested bodies and committees examine all changes, amendments and proposals so as to agree on a final document.

It is, therefore, far too late to influence any outcome, but there is still plenty of on-going discussion, as reflected in Voltimum's VoltiBLOG (www.wiring-regulations.co.uk) - just click on the 'Read news of Voltimum users' button below to read them.

Comment: "I am just completely in the dark as regards the changes to the wiring regs, I know its coming but don't know anymore. It seems almost like they don't want us to know about it!!"

Reply: "The draft copy of the 17th edition of the BS7671 Regulations is presently available for public consultation and therefore the exact content of the final copy is uncertain for the time being. The main noticable amendments for the 17th edition wiring regulations to date include the following:

Regulation 132.13 which concerns drawings for electrical installations.

Chapter 41 which concerns the RCD required for general use sockets as well as equipment that is mobile.

Section 701 which concerns circuits in bathrooms requiring a 30mA RCD.

The 17th edition contains many more amendments over the 16th edition wiring regulations, but it would be pointless to list them all here when the full draft document is available for download from the IEE website.

Discussions are taking place elsewhere too. Go to www.theiet.org/forums/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=205&threadid=16629 to see an interesting discussion in the IET Forums about the 17th Edition, on the topic of electrical services for bathrooms. This aspect of the changes proposed in the 17th Edition is clearly one that has concerned many electrical installers and engineers. Take a look - what do you think? We welcome your comments.

17th Edition VoltiBLOG is (www.wiring-regulations.co.uk) the regularly updated website where Voltimum (www.voltimum.co.uk) users can keep up to date with the changes and exchange views with their peers. Why not add your own comments. Just click the 'Send your views' button to add them. We welcome your news and views on the 17th Edition.
