John Walker's newly created role will include acting as an international ambassador for the department, focusing particularly on the Middle East, which is currently investing heavily in new energy-related strategies for the post-oil era.
Professor Walker said: "This is a tremendous honour - but also very much a practical marketing role. Whilst raising Strathclyde's profile worldwide, I will also be waving the flag for the UK power industry as a whole.
"Britain has a great deal to offer emerging countries in a vast range of energy technologies, whether they involve developing renewables and new networks, or training to improve engineering and academic skills. The business opportunities now available for the UK globally are unprecedented", he concluded.
A graduate in engineering and mathematics from the University of Liverpool, Professor Walker is a former regional director of MANWEB and joined power engineering specialists EA Technology in 1991, where he was MD from 1997 to 2001. He is currently a non-executive director and a member of the board.
