A number of leading firms in the UK's building industry have taken action to bring a greener philosophy to construction. They have created the UK Green Building Council, which aims to transform the sector into a "sustainable industry within the next ten years".
Among the groups 36 members are firms such as Barratt Homes, Land Securities Group, Nationwide Building Society and WWF.
Peter Rogers, who is chairing the new council, told the BBC that the aim was to change towards energy usage in construction.
"We are still living in a horsepower economy. People like big cars, powerful things, lots of lights and devices in the house," he said.
"You can still do all of that, but everyone needs to recognise that we have to do it in an energy efficient way."
Recently the government announced proposals to make all new homes carbon neutral by 2016.
Buildings are responsible for around 50 per cent of the UK's annual greenhouse gas emissions, it is thought.
