Laing O'Rourke heads 14 construction companies in Britain's 100 biggest private companies list

Laing O’Rourke has risen to seventh place in the Sunday Times’ latest list of Britain’s 100 biggest private companies.



Based in Dartford, Kent, it has 22,000 employees and an annual turnover of £2.2bn. The company’s main shareholders are Ray O’Rourke (55%) and Hugh O’Rourke (29%).

In all, the list includes 14 names from the construction and housebuilding sector.

The three others who make it into the top quartile are JCB (20th), Sir Robert McAlpine (21st) and Miller Group (23rd). Each has a turnover of around £1bn a year.

Six names in the next band (turnover of £500m-plus) are Wates, Bowmer & Kirkland, Shepherd, Mott MacDonald (50% owned by a family trust), property services provider OCS and builder Bloor Holdings.

Completing the top grouping are NG Bailey (turnover of £490m), Gladedale £480m), Arup Group (£480m) which is owned by its employees through three trusts and Keepmoat (£470m) where Terry Bramall has a 76% shareholding.
