The 2006 campaign urged people to switch off, lift off and turn off; promoting the behavioural changes that can have a significant impact on cutting carbon. Feedback from this campaign confirmed the enthusiasm and commitment of those who took part but also underlined the need for more help and advice on measuring, reducing and managing emissions. Many participants had difficulty with the calculation required as part of the campaign – a barrier which this new project aims to overcome.
As part of the 2007 initiative CIBSE will be offering the expertise provided by its Low Carbon Consultants free of charge to help 20 participants from various sectors to take practical and cost effective measures to deliver real energy savings. This ‘100 days: realising the savings pilot study is funded by the Carbon Trust.
The Low Carbon Consultant will also enhance the organisation’s energy management skills by training a member of staff to carry out annual energy assessments, a skill needed to produce an energy certificate for buildings.
The results from this pilot study will then be used to provide new and improved guidance for the second 100 Days of Carbon Clean up Campaign, running from 11th September to 19th December 2007. Aimed at encouraging more people to save more carbon, the 2007 campaign will promote both behavioural changes and managerial initiatives to save energy within the workplace.
CIBSE President John Armstrong said: “We are delighted to be running our 100 days: realising the savings pilot study with a view to launching the 100 Days of Carbon Clean up Campaign in September. We had such a positive and committed response last year that this next campaign is set to save even greater amounts of energy and inspire a further cross section of the UK workplace’s to take action.”
