FireGrid System being developed by university professor

18.06.2007

FireGrid, a fire warning system for skyscrapers developed by Edinburgh University professor José Torero comprises a system of sensors attached to a remote computer which can monitor the spread of fire through a tall building and provide vital forecasting information to emergency services.

During recent tests, it slowed the spread of a fire in a 22-storey Glasgow tower block by three times, by controlling ventilation levels. Torero claims his system will give firefighters up to 30 minutes warning of an impending collapse. It will shortly be introduced as a working prototype.
