The Interstate Council for Standardization, Metrology and Certification of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) is the CIS Intergovernmental body for formulation and for carrying out of coordinated policy in the field of standardization, metrology and certification. The Interstate was created in 1992 to coordinate the works in the field of standardization, metrology and certification and to define the main directions of the interstate standardization, metrology, certification and accreditation in stated fields of activities.

This 31st Meeting, during which the organisation’s 15th anniversary was celebrated, represented an opportunity to unite the international standardization community and discuss the importance of voluntary standardization in support of legislation, in particular under the New Approach and in support of European Commission industrial policies. CENELEC Corporate Director Jon Echanove, representing both CEN and CENELEC, attended the meeting.

Standardization is indeed the most efficient co-regulation tool for better regulatory practices. The harmonisation of standards has helped remove technical and trading barriers and build the European Single Market. This tool has proved to be fruitful as far as access to markets, interoperability of products and services and consumer safety are concerned. Through the implementation of their Affiliation status, CEN and CENELEC have been expanding the reach of European Standards to a wider range of countries.

The fruitful meeting held by EASC has helped tighten the links between standardization organisations coming from different horizons, widening the prospects of European standardization worldwide.
