In what must be one of the most bizarre twists in the evolution of the WEEE Regulations, DTI have recently announced that they have appointed........... the Vehicle Certification Agency to make sure that from 1 July, electrical equipment retailers are complying with their obligations.
If anyone can come up with any logic behind that decision, we would be fascinated to hear from you, but it will be their task to inspect retail prmises to ensure that either they are signed up to the Distributor Takeback Scheme or they are offering in-store take back. In both cases, there will be a requirement for the retailer to offer infomation to the public about WEEE recycling which in the former case, will be about the environmental benefits and where, locally, the public can take WEEE to and in the latter, be notices displayed telling customers they are entitled to return WEEE to the store on a like-for-like basis.
Whilst the basics of what should be displayed are in the Regulations, there has still been nothing published about the detail and how it should be displayed. We are hoping that the British Retail Consortium will be taking a lead on this, but if not, we will come up with a template for our members as soon as possible.
