The building services industry must not be afraid to look back at previous projects, learning from both the positive and negative, to ensure the future of better buildings, says the new President of The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

John Armstrong MPhil, CEng, FCIBSE, MIMechE, MBIFM believes that the industry should work towards a ‘better understanding’ between fellow professionals, urging facilities managers, building operators and designers to use their skills to ‘complete the circle’. Only by actively seeking to know how buildings are performing, how they are being operated and whether they are meeting user expectations; can the industry truly make future buildings better.

“To fully complete the circle, we must as a profession be prepared to judge how buildings have performed in practice, acknowledge where there have been significant successes but also recognise that not all buildings have been perfect and there is considerable room for improvement.”

Touching on key topics such as the impact of climate change, current concerns facing the industry and the reign of fossil fuels, the Presidential Address also focuses on the role of Facilities Managers, stating that ‘Facilities Managers must be regarded as important people in the operation, management and maintenance of our building stock’.

The CIBSE Annual General Meeting and Presidential Address took place at the Worshipful Company of Grocers on 3rd May 2007. The new President spoke of the progress that CIBSE has made in the one hundred and ten years since it began as the Institution of Heating and Ventilation Engineers, praising the work of the regions, groups and the growing Young Engineers Network.
