  • Lamps Part 1
  • Lamps Part 2

Part 1

This first part of a two-part article outlines the characteristics of the types of lamp commonly used in domestic, commercial and industrial applications. In the second part, we will address in more detail the particular types of lamp and discuss their characteristics including the mechanism by which each emits light, starting and restarting characteristics, their colour temperature and colour rendering indexes, and typical uses.

In the selection of a lighting source, the lighting designer needs to consider the various types of lamp and decide which are most appropriate for the purpose. Criteria will include:

  • colour temperature
  • colour rendering
  • luminous efficacy/energy efficiency
  • service period
  • physical dimensions of the lamp/luminaire
  • luminous flux
  • re-strike recovery time
  • dimming capability
  • capital costs
  • availabilityoperating costs
  • expected lifespan
  • replacement cost.

Part 2

Following on from the March Newsletter Lamps Part 1, this second part of a two-part article discusses the rendering index and typical uses. General information including colour temperature and ten families of lamps, the processes they use for converting electrical energy into light, and their particular characteristics such as starting and restarting, colour temperature, colour, colour rendering index was given in the March Newsletter.

  • Incandescent filament lamps (GLS Reflector)
  • Halogen-filled filament lamps (tungsten halogen)
  • Low pressure mercury fluorescent tubes
  • Compact fluorescent lamps
  • High pressure sodium lamps
  • Low pressure sodium lamps
  • Metal halide discharge lamps
  • High pressure mercury discharge lamps
  • Induction lamps
  • Light emitting diodes (LEDs)

All detail the following information:

  • Operating position
  • Control gear
  • Starting
  • Restarting
  • Colour temperature K
  • Colour rendering index
