The Project
Copod is a unique multi-functional ‘combination’ pod from Elements Europe that incorporates a range of different living areas, such as kitchen, bath and shower-room facilities. The combination concept optimises space utilisation and ergonomics without compromising aesthetics. The compact living concept delivers the ultimate in floor utilisation with a complete range of contemporary fit-out solutions.
Copod can configure staircase, cloakroom and storage facilities within a pod unit to create a truly adaptable and comprehensive product range. Using multiple Copods in an efficient, vertical configuration means that all building services can be consolidated into one central core for the building, thereby eliminating the requirement for first and second fix mechanical and electrical trades on site.
Designed for customised applications, Copod is ideally positioned to meet the individual demands of the UK residential accommodation market. MK Electric is working in close partnership with Elements to ensure that the installation of the electrical services is an integral part of the Copod.
The Build
The Copod is manufactured entirely off-site in a new state of the art world class manufacturing facility in Oswestry, Wales. Constructed from zinc-coated durable lightweight steel, the Copod has a wide variety of internal finishes to suit individual customer requirements. The build objectives for Copod are to deliver the central core for a building, utilising off-site factory installation and the mechanisation associated with factory mass-production and through-put; to realise huge time savings on-site.
The electrical services are a key component of the central core and the MK Flexible Wiring System ensures that the electrical MK Flexible Wiring System installation can take place utilising the factory operatives and in line with factory through-put. The system guarantees quality and reliability of the electrical installation while reducing the installation time. In addition, MK supplies site kits that allow additional outlets to be plugged into the main Pod extending the electrical services throughout the entire unit.
The Developer
Elements Europe represents a ground-breaking approach to the development and delivery of off-site construction solutions. Innovation and investment are the key components at the heart of the company’s ethos, creating a dynamic and forward thinking business. Meeting specific client needs is the core principle behind the creation of a flexible and responsive manufacturing supply capability.
In developing the product concepts, Elements Europe has harnessed best practice global off-site construction technology, with the latest product and material innovation within a world-class manufacturing facility to create a revolutionary business delivery unit for the construction sector.
The MK Flexible Wiring System
The MK Flexible Wiring System provides a cost effective and comprehensive solution to the provision of electrical services for all types of off-site manufactured homes, be it a panelised, volumetric or hybrid construction technique. The system allows for complete off-site installation, using low skilled factory operatives – and has the almost infinite capacity for extension and upgrading as building usages and occupant needs change.
MK offers a full design and technical support service, and will convert architects’ drawings into detailed wiring diagrams assuring efficient overall system design. In addition, MK will provide work instructions, designed in conjunction with the client, to ensure that the system can be installed simply and effectively. This, along with the innovative products and operator training, reduces risk and guarantees a high quality electrical installation.
The highly popular MK Logic Plus range of Wiring Devices are equipped with a new patented miniature power connector allowing the wiring system leads to be plugged directly into the rear of the product. No tools are required and the connector guarantees polarity and continuity of every connection. This, along with the traditional MK safety standards, ensures all projects are completed to the highest standards with the least risk.
The MK Flexible Wiring System is recognised and fully supported by the NICEIC who have developed a dedicated sign-off certificate for this system. Training programmes are available for electricians covering a system overview, installation and the sign-off process.
The Client
Managing Director of Elements Europe Ltd, Wayne Morgan, says of the Flexible Wiring System: “It really is great – and we are delighted with it. It meets and exceeds all our installation quality needs, while providing tremendous savings in the factory – both in terms of cost and time”. Wayne continues: “Moreover, the technical expertise of the MK Flexible Wiring team ensured smooth implementation of the system into the factory production; making the system as much of a service offer as a product one”.
