A DIT student has been awarded the "Young Lighter of the Year Award" in a competition organised by the Society of Light and Lighting in London.

Joseph Brennan, who is a third-year student of Electrical Services Engineering in DIT, won the award for his paper "Effects of Light on Humans" which examined how humans react to both natural and artificial light.

The magnitude of the achievment was outlined by Mr. Tommy Nugent, a lecturer in Electrical Services Engineering, "... the applicants are predominantly post graduate practitioners in the lighting industry. Joseph was an exception this year, being selected for the finals while still a student. For him to win the competition was therefore a fantastic personal achievement." Mr. Nugent also thanked Dr. Veronica O'Dwyer from the Department of Optometry in DIT for her help with Joseph's work. Its subject matter required him to be up to date with current status of opthalmic research.

The Society of Light and Lighting is influential in developing standards for building regulations, health and safety legislation and on the development of lighting technology. It was established by the Chartered Institute of Building Service Engineers (CIBSE).
