New network of NAPIT approved training centres

09.01.2007

Following an increase in the number of training and assessment centres offering NAPIT (National Association for Professional Inspectors and Testers) courses and qualifications, a target has been set to double the number of such centres in the UK over the coming months:

The centres are helping to drive up industry standards. An increasing number of NAPIT training centres means that those in the industry are striving to ensure excellent standards of electrical work and safety at all times. People wanting to get approved industry qualifications can now access them at a NAPIT centre much more easily and further expansion will bring courses even closer to home.

Getting the correct training and qualifications has never been more important to the electrical industry.

Being properly qualified and registered to carry out work is now vital. The introduction of Part P and the Competent Persons Schemes means that electricians are now able to self-certify work which is guaranteed to meet the building regulations.

Self-certification under building regulations means that time can be saved as tradespeople do not have to wait for building approval from local authorities. Tradespeople can simply self-certify work through NAPIT instead.

Ten approved training centres:

There are now around 10 approved training centres offering NAPIT assessments, working with Blue Flame Certification, across the UK and it is hoped that this will help lead to increasing standards in the industry nationwide.

The first college to receive full scope approval for NAPIT's Part P scheme was Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education. NAPIT played a key role in helping the college achieve this.

NAPIT develops the standards required and then works with certification bodies who then attract and approve training centres. Having recently increased the certification bodies involved to four, even more centres should gain access to the NAPIT schemes.

NAPIT's David Cowburn said: "Our approved centres offer easy and ready access to one of a number of assessments that can be taken in order to become NAPIT members and comply with the Building Regulations. This expanding training network enables us to get assessment to the people, rather than the people to the assessments.

"There are an increasing number of centres offering NAPIT approved schemes so it should be much easier for people to access one of them."

In the past people would have had to travel to NAPIT's Mansfield base in order to access a NAPIT-backed training course, but with the expansion of the centre network training should only be a short distance away, no matter where people live.

Centres that are up and running so far include those in Grimsby, Newcastle-Under-Lyme, Jersey, Birmingham, Mansfield, Wolverhampton and Burnley. Centres currently working towards approval include those in Lincoln, Salisbury, Bury and Rochester.
