A new trend in promoting cities is taking hold across the world. New Light Emitting Diode (
LED) lighting systems are being used to light up bridges, monuments and buildings in the world's cities in ways which have never been possible before. These stunning lighting effects are being used to promote cities, increase tourism, and highlight key landmarks at night. So called 'City Beautification' through lighting is a fast growing global business, now worth almost $2bn/year and the emergence of new LED lighting systems are set to push growth.
Recent examples of cities and landmarks being lit using Philips Lighting LED lighting systems include Chelsea Bridge in London, The Reichstag in Berlin, The Town Hall in Rotterdam in the Netherlands, The Church of Lima in Peru, the Coliseum in Hong Kong and the IRR bridge in Bangkok.
Innovative Philips LED lighting solutions are driving these innovations and are allowing lighting designers and architects to create effects and illuminate key architectural features in ways unimaginable only a few years ago. LEDs offer a number of key advantages over traditional floodlighting. They are smaller, colour dynamic, more flexible, are water resistant, have a longer lifetime, and have reduced maintenance costs. In addition they are safer as they run at low voltages, offer greater colour options and have a huge potential for energy saving and environmental benefits.
Sustainable lighting:
LEDs also have a tremendous potential as a sustainable type of lighting. Projections for the near future indicate that this new technology will save energy, running costs and indirectly CO2 emissions and will therefore contribute to the fight against climate change.

One example of an imaginative lighting scheme is in Ostersund in Sweden where a local landmark tower has been lit up to resemble the aurora borealis otherwise known as the Northern Lights.
"The future is very exciting" says Berthold Velthuis. "The number of effects we can offer our customers is limited only by the imagination."
