VoltiBULLETIN - October 2006 - Circuit Breakers Vs. Fuses

This month, you can learn about more about that old chestnut, the debate about whether fuses or circuit-breakers are best for protection.

Dear User,

Well, we asked you to keep your fingers crossed and it seems to have worked because you are now reading the award-winning VoltiBULLETIN!!! On the 20th September at the prestigious Electrical Industry awards, VoltiBULLETIN scooped the award for 'Outstanding Communication within the Electrical Industry'. For more information on the award and the night, click on the banner at the top of the bulletin.

This month, you can learn about more about that old chestnut, the debate about whether fuses or circuit-breakers are best for protection:

The argument is an old one – which to use: fuses or circuit-breakers as electrical safety or equipment protection devices? The argument was almost done to death a decade ago, yet today, when the fuse is still older and circuit-breakers have developed still further, the time is ripe to revisit this debate. Reliable circuit protection devices are required wherever electrical current flows. Such devices are fuses, miniature circuit breakers (MCBs), and moulded case circuit breakers (MCCBs). They protect cables and other electrical equipment, as well as cutting the danger of fire occurring through electrical fault. In reality, the old argument of fuses versus fuseless technologies is not of value – the one is not intrinsically better than the other. Each technology has pros and cons.
