Voltimum Manufacturing Partner Prysmian Cables and Systems has secured what it terms 'a ground breaking contract' to design and build the world's largest high voltage DC submarine link between Sardinia and the Italian mainland:
The contract is worth over 400m Euros and will be the largest connection ever produced by a single supplier, carrying more energy than any other link at 1000 MW, at a maximum depth of 1600m.
Valerio Battista, Prysmian's CEO in Milan said: "This is a milestone in the submarine energy transmission systems industry. The project makes us especially proud because it gives us the opportunity to reconfirm our position as the leader in this industry. This is something we established as Pirelli and are pleased to continue as Prysmian."
Prysmian will provide a turnkey system including the engineering, production and laying of two 500kV DC cable terminals, comprising a total of 800km of land and submarine cable. Prysmian will install the submarine cable from its own cable-laying ship, Giulio Verne.
The project is of strategic importance for the development of the Italian energy transmission network and will increase the current 300MW to the record energy transmission of 1000MW. Completion of the first terminal of the project is expected by August 2008.
