Voltimum Founder Member company ABB has won contracts worth a total of 33m dollars to provide power equipment and cable connections for the Dutch offshore wind farm, Q7. This will provide power for 140,000 homes and cut annual CO2 emissions by 255,000 tons, it is claimed:

"ABB leads the world in supplying renewable energy projects like this one with reliable products and systems," said Samir Brikho, head of ABB's Power Systems division. "Our strong local presence in the Netherlands, technical strength and broad experience in this market will help bring Q7 to life."

ABB will supply 24kV underwater power cables connecting 60 wind turbines to a 150kV offshore transformer station, plus a 170kV underwater power cable linking the offshore transformer station to the grid onshore.

ABB will also supply and install primary equipment in the offshore transformer station, including a 140 MVA transformer, a 150kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), and a 24kV GIS.

Q7 will be the largest wind farm in the Dutch North Sea when it commences operation in 2007, about 30km from Amsterdam. Each turbine will generate about two MW of power, totaling about 435 gigawatt/hours per year - enough to power roughly 140,000 homes, and reduce CO2 emissions by 255,000 tons annually.

The contract includes a study to help ensure the project complies with Dutch grid codes. The Dutch government is aiming for offshore wind power production of 6,000W by 2020.

More about windpower in Europe:

Europe's installed wind power capacity of 40,500 MW is 69% of world's total generated wind power. Wind power capacity in Europe grew by 18% in 2005, and provides nearly 3% of the EU's electricity consumption in an average wind year.

New installed capacity in Europe during 2005 was led by Germany (1,808 MW), Spain (1,764 MW) and Portugal (500 MW). Wind energy is expected to supply more than one fifth of Europe's power needs by 2030.
