Designed for

All those with a responsibility for the installation and/or maintenance of building services systems and those wishing to be assessed as an Energy Supervisor under the ECA’s Electrical Energy Efficiency Scheme.

Aims

After completion of the course candidates should have a sound appreciation of Part L of the building regulations and an understanding of how the amendments affect electrical work within buildings. In particular, they should be able to:

  • Explain how Part L bears upon the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of electrical installations.
  • Identify and describe the responsibilities of Energy Supervisors working for firms registered with the ECA’s Electrical Energy Efficiency Competent Person Scheme.

Objectives

At the end of the course delegates should be able to:

  • Describe the structure of Part L of the Building Regulations and describe why and how it has been amended.
  • Identify the parts of Part L of the Building Regulations and list the differences between them.
  • Identify how compliance with part ADL2A of Part L of the Building Regulations can be demonstrated.
  • Identify how compliance with part ADL2B of Part L of the Building Regulations can be demonstrated.
  • Describe how electrical installations must comply with Part L of the Building Regulations, in particular, lighting, electrical heating, energy metering and building services controls.
  • Explain the requirements for the provision of information on the operation and maintenance of building services and how the requirement might be satisfied.
  • Describe what is meant by a 'Competent Person' - what they are required to do (i.e. to selfcertificate compliance with Part L of the Building Regulations and report notifiable work that has been carried out).
  • Understand how a 'Competent Person' is regulated and the role of the 'Energy Supervisor'.
