The EDF Energy Trust, an independent charity giving grants to people struggling to pay their energy bills, has met an important milestone - it has awarded more than £1m to clear energy debts amounting to over 2,500 awards:
The Trust, which was established at the end of 2003 with the generous support of EDF Energy, aims to make a long term difference to people's lives, and is available for customers of EDF Energy including the brands formally known as SWEB Energy, Seeboard Energy and London Energy.
EDF Energy is one of the UK's largest energy companies. It provides power to a quarter of the UK's population via our electricity distribution networks in London, the SE and the East of England.
People can apply to the Trust for help to clear debts of gas and electricity, and occasionally the Trust can also provide funds for other essential household items and bills. These grants are not loans - they do not have to be repaid!
An example of an individual couple helped was a husband and wife from Brighton had their fuel debts paid by the Trust. The couple, both pensioners, had managed their bills until an illness with one led to a lengthy recovery at home leading to rising fuel bills. The couple also received an extra quality of life payment to enable them to purchase a much-needed new fridge freezer.
Eoin Lees, Chair of the Trust said, "We are delighted that we've reached this significant milestone and that the Trust has been able to make a real difference for so many people since the Trust was launched. But we know there are many more people out there struggling to pay their utility bills".
