Massimo Battaini, UK CEO for Prysmian, talks about
at the company’s change of ownership, and its commitment to developing the
future of the business.
Customers can rest assured that the change in name and ownership has resulted
in minimum changes to our operations and company structure. The same capability,
know-how and products that customers were used to under the Pirelli name,
back-up the new brand and visual identity that we have as Prysmian.
As a leading investment banking group Goldman Sachs has a long history of
investing in blue chip organisations and market leaders, so it’s no surprise
they chose us. Our new owners are fully supportive of the existing management
team, and are committed to developing the future of the business that will
continue our long and respected tradition of innovation and quality.
Prysmian is the largest producer of cables and cabling systems in the world,
employing around 12,000 people, operating in 21 countries, and with a sales
turnover of over €3.75 billion Euro (£2.6 billion). We continue to be market
leader and innovation driver in the UK energy cables market, with a turnover of
€920 million (£638 million).
This success stems from appreciation of our customers needs and requirements
and our commitment to the development of innovative products for highly diverse
applications. Whether that’s in the electrical contracting/ wholesaling, railway
or utilities markets, we use our extensive research capabilities to deliver
unrivalled products. We never lose sight of the fact that our customers need
both real business benefits in a competitive and demanding market.
Because we are a domestic manufacturer we have a nationwide
presence with innovative logistics and forecast planning. How does this benefit
our customers? We can ensure good continuity and navigation of product to help
them to set up approved supply routes, which means projects run more smoothly.
One way we are helping customers in today’s climate, with stringent
regulations and clients requiring increasingly cost effective solutions, is
through designing whole systems - not just functional products. Our FP Firefix
cable installation system has already revolutionised the electrical contracting
sector, allowing our FP 200 Gold fire performance cable to be installed in half
the time taken using traditional methods. We’re very pleased with the positive
feedback that we have received. It has proven to save time and results in real
cost savings for contractors. Another feature that contractors find beneficial
is that the clips can be installed, ready for a qualified electrician to add the
cable later.
Our FP range of fire performance cables has been the market
leader for over 30 years and continues to be the number one brand name for fire
performance in the UK. We have given the range a new look to incorporate our new
name and make them easy to identify. The new look branding incorporates
the distinctive magenta, green and grey colours, which are synonymous with
Prysmian. In addition each cable in the FP range has its own brand icon.
We want to make our products easy to recognise so that wholesalers, contractors
and specifiers can clearly identify the products they need.
With a greater emphasis on the level of performance required by today’s fire
safety engineered building designs, and the prospect of changes to Fire Safety
Regulations, we are currently working to develop the next generation of fire
performance cables and systems to follow on from FP FIREFIX.
And, if customers need accessories we’re a one-stop-shop.
Because we are the only cables manufacturer to own its own accessories company,
customers can easily source accessories and components that have been designed
specifically for use with Prysmian cables. Customers can sit back and relax;
knowing that the joint they’ve ordered is going to fit their chosen cable.
So, as a company that is known for its long and respected innovation and
quality, we at Prysmian hope to expand our technical know-how and broaden the
benefits realised by many of our customers.
Massimo is the chief executive officer of Prysmian Cables and Systems Limited
in the UK, covering both energy and telecom cables.

in Italy. During the period 1987-2001 Massimo held various positions
within the tyre business, and moved to Pirelli Cables in 2002. He was
appointed chief executive officer for the energy and telecoms cables business in
the UK in 2005.
