A new certification service from British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC) has been devised to enable manufacturers of flexible cables, control wires and cord sets to demonstrate product compliance with EU Directive 2002/95/EC 'Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS)':

BASEC certification under the new RoHS provision enables manufacturers of cord sets etc to assure their customers that goods have been produced with due regard to the listing of the now proscribed hazardous substances specified in the RoHS directive.
The RoHS regulations work in close partnership with the end of life, product disposal regulations detailed in EU Directive 2002/96/EC 'Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)'. Together these directives govern a wide section of industry activity including, for example, consumer electrical product manufacture.
The new certification module functions as an extension of a company's pre-existing ISO9001 quality management system. BASEC will provide the new certification to any appropriate organisation, regardless of which body is responsible for on-going ISO9001 compliance.
To obtain RoHS certification, BASEC will require organisations to demonstrate appropriate up-stream, RoHS compliant, raw material supply arrangements and these will then be regularly checked as part of an ISO9001 audit process.
Full details of the new RoHS certification process are available from BASEC's head office in Milton Keynes, tel: 01908 267300 or from the BASEC website at: www.basec.org.uk.
