Newly built St Benedict's primary school and community centre in Glasgow is one of the first schools to benefit from an intelligent system that integrates the building's utilities. Glasgow City Council were able to put in place Schnieder Electric’s Transparent Building Integrated Systems following central government funding.

Schneider Electric's system covers electrical distribution, lighting control, security, air conditioning, heating and ventilation within St Benedict’s, one of the largest schools in east Glasgow.
Each area of the building is monitored via a central control room, with a touch screen from the Telemecanique brand of Schneider Electric allowing control of all services. The system is also web-enabled, so, if it chooses to, the facility management team can access it from anywhere in the world.
A PowerLogic energy metering system from the Merlin Gerin brand of Schneider Electric measures the exact amounts of energy consumption in specific parts of the building, and projects where energy savings are being made. It also highlights faults on the network, alerts facilities management and responds to acknowledgement if a problem occurs anywhere in the building.
"The system brings benefits over and above making the job of facilities managers easier," explained Simon Rowlinson, education segment marketing manager at Schneider Electric. "The increased efficiency means the running costs of the school can be kept to a minimum." With local sensors in all communal areas the lights are automatically turned off and on again whenever a room is entered or vacated. Even the showers in the changing rooms are automatic.
