New CIBSE approved initiative aimed at improving standards, helping customers, and reducing energy consumption/ CO2 emissions.

Philips Lighting has announced the creation of the Philips Lighting Academy - a series of training courses aimed primarily at wholesalers, installers, specifiers, architects & lighting designers. The courses are positioned at three levels starting with the basic Professional level, through the more advanced Master level and finally to the multi-day Designer level.

Research has hi-lighted the clear need for more lighting related training throughout Europe. The modern lighting industry is both complex and technical. Trends such as increased legislation and guidelines, a fast pace of innovations and lighting designs based on new and developing customer insights all feed into the need for more training.

There is also another key driver. Philips is committed to a policy of sustainability. It has already invested in and developed new energy efficient lighting technologies which can significantly reduce energy consumption and hence CO2 emissions - helping achieve Kyoto targets. As these new technologies will also save in running costs it becomes even more important to help people explain the options and make the right decisions when selling, designing or purchasing lighting.

The Philips Lighting Academy offers courses that focus on products, lighting systems, applications and designs. The Professional level courses are designed for new comers to the lighting industry. They vary between 2-3 hours, recognise that time is limited, and cover such topics as the basics of light, selling added value, lighting and the environment and an introduction to control gear for lamps.

The Master level courses are targeted at specifiers, architects and large installers. Also for some wholesalers and installers who want to distinguish themselves in the field of lighting. The courses vary between 4 hours and 2 days and cover such areas as lighting applications, Calculux Road and Area, European regulations indoor & outdoor and an advanced Total cost of ownership course.

The most advanced Designer level offers courses that are aimed at specifiers, designers and architects who want to excel in lighting in their specific application. The courses vary from 2 days to one and a half weeks. These include an architectural lighting workshop and indoor and outdoor lighting designer courses.

Brian Jacob heads up the UK training team. The Philips Lighting Academy offers certificates on completion of courses and CIBSE has already confirmed its support for the academy as part of its continual professional development (CPD) program.
