| Ryan - Dazed & Confused the day after |
|
On a Sunday when most people where chilling in their deck chairs smiling at their BBQ's, Ryan was dragging his body through the Thames and the cobbles of London (1.5km Swim, 40km Cycle and 10km Run) in an orange RNLI vest and a Leopard-Skin Speedo. "I thought it was a good combination - It brought loads of cheering, raised awareness for the RNLI and remember, there is no such thing as bad publicity."
More than 4,500 volunteer Lifeboat Crew Members are based at 233 lifeboat stations throughout the UK and the Republic of Ireland. In 2004, Lifeboats launched over 7,600 times and rescued 7,507 people.
Heidi Shrimpton, the Greater London Regional Events Manager stated that "The RNLI is funded almost entirely by voluntary donations and legacies. For us to continue to save lives at sea and fund our plans for the future, we need your help."
A qualified lifeguard himself, Ryan spent many a weekend life-saving back in his native South Africa. "I'm no David Hasselhof and the RNLI is certainly not Baywatch. These people are doing a serious job without much recognition or funding. They save a lot of lives."
