Tarmac cuts carbon dioxide emissions in half

Schneider Electric's Projects & Services has helped Tarmac Southern to achieve its public corporate commitment to significantly reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions:

The installation of Schneider Electric's Telemecanique brand Altivar variable speed drives (VSDs) at Tarmac's asphalt plants has also saved the company £25,000 in the last year alone.

Given that the asphalt plants are the largest consumers of energy within the Tarmac Group, Tarmac Southern Limited, decided to target these plants first. Projects & Services carried out an initial Energy Saving Audit at Tarmac's asphalt plant in Hayes, Greater London. Through continuous monitoring of the main extract fan, the Projects & Services team was able to identify potential and attractive energy savings. The audit included a report guaranteeing energy savings based on replacing the fan starter and airflow control system with an Altivar VSD from Telemecanique. The fan, which was left running all day long, regardless of the time and level of activity at the plant, was losing Tarmac both energy and money. The installation of the drive made it possible to slow the fan down when it was not required.

A need to save energy and reduce CO2 emissions:

Projects & Services needed to identify a solution that by saving energy also contributed directly to the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Following the completion of the project, the post-installation energy survey revealed that carbon dioxide emissions were down from 459,000kg pa to 175,541kg pa.

By helping Tarmac to be more environmentally friendly, Projects & Services increased the company's capabilities with regards to the ISO 14001 environmental management standard.

In addition to cutting carbon dioxide emissions, the results of the £18,000 project at the Hayes plant have been excellent, with Tarmac seeing a return on its investment within a year. In addition, Tarmac saved £25,000 in energy costs in 2004, and expects to see this figure rise to £40,000 in 2005. The power used per motor has more than halved - with an average reduction of 64kW from an original 104kW per motor.

Electricity costs have also been cut by more than fifty percent, with the cost per fan down to £26.41 from £68.66/1000Te. These impressive results manifest themselves in an overall annual running cost of £13,341.12 pa, just one third of the cost prior to the project's start.

Schneider Electric's Projects & Services proved themselves to be a valuable partner at the Hayes plant and continue to work with Tarmac, installing Telemecanique Altivar VSDs at all thirty-five of their asphalt plants.
