Major international process industry safety conference

A major international safety conference, sponsored by Voltimum Founder Member Company ABB, will examine, on a global scale, the complex and challenging issues faced by industry in maintaining the safety performance of their processes while improving profitability:

Entitled, Safety, Standards & Regulations - an industry perspective, the event will be held on 27th and 28th September 2005 at a prestigious venue in Manchester. Anyone interested in further information should contact Sally Stapleton, tel: +44 (0)1480 488223 or sally.stapleton@gb.abb.com

The event brings together representatives from international end user organisations and asset owners to discuss how they address regulations and what more needs to be done in order to keep abreast of the standards, technology and regulatory regimes.

The conference will address:

  • Safety technologies - trends, model solutions, risks in implementing new technologies, smart versus traditional, certified or non-certified products.
  • Compliance to standards and regulations - issues, pressures, cost versus benefit, practical experiences of regulatory inspections/audits - lessons learnt, demonstrating compliance to the market - pros and cons.
  • Safety issues with respect to globalisation - safety supply chains - partnerships, safety specifications, building trust, operation and maintenance issues, competency requirements.
  • Case studies related to safety-related projects.
  • Safety life cycle implementations - lessons learnt.
  • Practical experiences of implementing IEC 61508/IEC 61511.

Will shed light on the issues:

"Today's industry strives to improve performance and profitability while maintaining and improving safety," says Stuart Nunns, one of ABB's safety consultants.

"The challenges include unremitting pressure to reduce costs, shorter product life-cycles, the need to reach the marketplace faster than ever, pressure to maximise the use of the asset base and plant availability and pressure to reduce spurious alarms. In addition, there are increasing regulatory and social requirements for safety, reliability, full documentation at all times and decision traceability.

"We hope that the conference will be able to shed light on many of these issues and that delegates will go away wiser and more prepared to tackle today's top issues."

The organisers have secured a wide spectrum of speakers from the international process industry, international safety regulators and end users.
