Specially made ‘lounge plates’ and ‘kitchen plates’ provide power, lighting, telecom and radio/TV outlet facilities in a development of 97 new luxury apartments overlooking the River Thames alongside Chelsea Bridge, London. Eaton’s MEM has supplied all the wiring accessories and special 32-way consumer units in the apartments. It also supplied the main switchboard, essential services board and distribution boards for landlord’s services.
Berkeley Homes’ Centurion development marks Phase 2 of a three-phase development on a once-derelict site at Chelsea Bridge Wharf, next to the former Battersea Power Station. The choice of Eaton’s MEM installation equipment follows the successful use of the company’s products in Phase 1, a mixed development of social housing and private apartments, also built to a very high specification. The complete Chelsea Bridge Wharf development will offer 650 new homes ranging from social housing and ‘affordable homes’ to luxury penthouse suites with spectacular views of the Thames.
Each Centurion apartment has a 32-way Memera 2000 consumer unit which incorporates a contactor controlling the kitchen hob and a bell transformer in addition to normal circuit protection devices. Most circuits have miniature circuit-breaker protection but selected circuits such as the kitchen area and bathrooms have RCBO protection.
Lounge areas have two separate lighting circuits controlled by two-gang dimmer switches. General lighting is provided by downlights while a low-level lighting circuit, feeding 5A socket-outlets, allows homeowners to connect their own lighting, controlled by a dimmer switch. All switches and other accessories mounted at eye-level are highly polished units from the Aura flush metal range.
The special ‘lounge plates’ offer four 13A switched socket-outlets, one 5A lighting outlet, telephone and data outlets, FM radio, TV and satellite outlets together with sockets for return connections from the satellite box and the radio to additional outlets elsewhere in the apartment. The plates are produced by Eaton’s MEM in its Ultra flat plate style. Other low-level accessories including socket-outlets, switched spur units, telephone/data outlets and TV/FM outlets are also from the Ultra flat plate range. They are all finished white.
Special ‘kitchen plates’ have also been produced. These incorporate two 13A socket-outlets, telephone, TV and radio outlets and, in some cases, a switch for a waste disposal unit. These are produced in black or highly polished finishes to blend with the kitchen decor.
Yet another special plate in the kitchen provides centralised switching for eight major kitchen appliances (for example hob, oven, microwave, extractor fan, dishwasher, coffee maker, fridge/freezer, and waste disposal unit) via 20A double-pole switches. They have been assembled from the Spectra grid switch system in six different patterns and six colours.
In addition to the wiring accessories and consumer units in the apartments, the company has supplied a main switchboard and essential services board together with special MCB distribution boards for landlord’s services. The two switchboards are factory-built Form 4 Type 6 units. A number of RCD-protected socket-outlets are installed in public areas.
In the earlier Phase 1 Development, Grosvenor House, Eaton’s MEM also provided switchboards, distribution boards, consumer units and wiring accessories. In this case wiring accessories were standard products from the Aura, Intra and Ultra ranges.
Chelsea Bridge Wharf is a Berkeley Homes development with Bovis Lend-Lease as the main contractor. Hills Electrical & Mechanical is the electrical contractor.
