September 2004 Issue

Dear user,

Premises owners have new responsibilities with mandatory telecomms standard BS 6701:2004

New standards can have a major impact on all concerned. Here, we take a look at one of the latest - the new installation standard for telecommunications equipment / cabling. It covers all telecommunications cabling / equipment for premises within the scope of the IEE wiring regulations.

BS 6701:2004 came into effect in June 04 and it defines requirements and responsibilities for the premises owner. Currently, many of them, as well as facilities managers, installers and electricians are unaware of the implications. However, companies are now responsible for unreliable / unsafe telecommunication systems, and non-compliance could result in severe penalties.

The new mandatory standard is an upgrade of code of practice BS 6701:1999 to a full BS. Mike Gilmore, Technical and Standards Director, Fibreoptics Industry Association (FIA) and Senior Partner of the Cabling Partnership, commented: “Ignoring BS6701 risks the installation of an unsafe system, a bad idea in increasingly litigious times.”
