A new World Class Sailing Academy in Portland, that will host the sailing events for the 2012 Olympics if they come to the United Kingdom, has power supplies protected and controlled by Eaton’s MEM equipment. Weymouth and Portland Sailing has already host
The new £8 million Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy development, on a former Royal Navy Helicopter Station in Portland Harbour, will provide state-of-the-art training and practice facilities for everybody, from complete novices to Olympic sailors. At the heart of the development is a new Events Centre which includes seminar rooms, a gymnasium, changing facilities, physiotherapy area, a race office, jury room, restaurant and a large multi-purpose area that will even allow boats to be brought in for scrutiny. The Centre is designed to be fully inclusive with extensive provision for disabled people. A photovoltaic power supply will help reduce energy requirements.
Accolade Building Services of Ringwood, the electrical contractor, has used Eaton’s MEM Memshield MPS modular panelboard system for the main switchboard, together with six Memshield 2 distribution boards and Memstyle wiring accessories throughout.
The Memshield MPS main panel has a 400A moulded-case circuit-breaker incomer. Outgoing circuits include a 160A MCCB for the kitchen, 125A MCCB for a motor control panel and 40A MCCBs supplying six final distribution boards. Spare outgoing ways allow for future system expansion. Transient voltage surge suppression is also incorporated. The panel was supplied as a factory-built assembly.
“The MPS board was easy to install and offers easy cable access” says ABS Project Manager Ken Norman. “ABS is a design and build company and we use Eaton’s MEM equipment in the majority of our projects.”
In addition to the main panel, six Memshield 2 distribution boards around the site provide final distribution via single-pole and three-pole miniature circuit-breakers. Selected circuits also incorporate residual current protection making use of the unique Eaton MEM ‘pod’ RCBO. Switches, socket-outlets and other wiring accessories are from the Intra range of white moulded products. Switches are normally grid switches. Accessories from the Xtra surface metalclad range are used in plant rooms and storage areas.
The new Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy is scheduled for completion in September. It is funded by a broad partnership including the South West Regional Development Authority, Sport England (with National Lottery funding), the English Institute of Sport, the local authorities in the area, charitable grants and individual contributions. Main contractor is Dean & Dyball Construction and Consulting Engineer is Gifford and Partners of Southampton.
