Question: In an electrical installation I'm working on, the most practical path from the meter location to an adjoining building (garage conversion), is by running an SWA cable externally.
I require an 'On Peak' and an 'Off Peak' supply to this building. Can I run a five-core SWA cable to accommodate both supplies?
Answer: There is nothing in BS7671:2008 that prohibits this method, providing that both circuits are electrically separate - i.e, separate line and neutral conductors, which must also be correctly identified by colour at each termination to indicate line, neutral and circuit number (e.g. C1, C2).
The remaining core may be used as a common circuit protective conductor (CPC) in parallel with cable armour.
