Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management, has expanded its popular Altivar range of variable speed drives (VSDs) to include the ATV32. This innovative new product joins the company’s latest generation of VSDs and has been designed to integrate with Schneider Electric’s range of motor controllers.

Designed for advanced mid-range machines, the ATV32 range covers asynchronous and synchronous motors from 0.18kW to 15kW. One of the key features is the slimline book style of models measuring up to 4kW. Smaller VSDs ranging up to 1.5kW represent an industry first, offering a frame width of just 45mm - the smallest footprint on the market. At this size, side-by-side mounting can mean a reduction in enclosure size of up to 40 per cent, or enable more drives to be fitted into the same space.

Within this compact package are 150 application-specific functions, simple programmable control system functions and embedded machine safety features. These include safe torque off, safe limited speed and safe stop, making the ATV32 particularly suitable for all cutting processes plus applications in the wood and metal industries. Management benefits include Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity through Schneider Electric’s SoMove software suite, enabling remote configuration and control, allowing for maximum flexibility.

Offering open communications, the ATV32 also has embedded CANopen and Modbus and has the ability to communicate with most industrial networks for complex and automated applications. At the same time its embedded ATV Logic makes it suitable for stand-alone applications.

A wide range of configuration options are available. For example, a simple loader which includes a copy and paste tool will allow the drive to be configured with the power on. With a multi-loader, the operator can click and configure the drive with the power off. The SoMove software removes the need for a PC and all configuration data can be stored on an SD card. There are also multiple HMI (human/machine interface) options, including remote terminal or a simple-to-use drive navigator with a full-text clear display.
