Schneider Electric pushes the button

In today’s turbulent economic environment, the need for businesses to reduce energy usage and cut operational costs while lowering emissions, has never been greater. In order to avoid costly downtime and unplanned maintenance, manufacturers are looking to experts such as Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management, to provide innovative products that can ensure productivity is at optimum level.

With this in mind, Schneider Electric has developed a wireless and batteryless pushbutton - the wireless XB5R - designed to help customers increase energy efficiency in industrial applications, reduce maintenance costs and give greater flexibility in mobility to both operator and equipment.

The Wireless XB5R, which was highly commended at this year’s Electrical Times Awards, is part of the company’s Harmony range, which enables remote control of a receiver (relay) by means of a transmitter, i.e. the button. Controlled by radio transmission, the button is fitted with a dynamo generator, designed to convert the mechanical energy produced when the button is pushed to electrical energy, which sends a ZigBee radio message to the receiver.

A unique radio-encoded message is then sent by a single pulse to one or more receivers that can be located up to 1000 metres away. The technology reduces installation time and costs by eliminating wiring and the associated equipment required between the push button and electrical enclosure.

The new technology allows an operator to be mobile or to have a control mounted on board a vehicle, meaning it is always available and requires no maintenance due to its lack of battery. The wireless technology means installers no longer need to pass a cable through the machine structure or cable tray to connect the pushbutton to the electrical panel. Furthermore, the installation costs of the wireless pushbuttons are reduced by a minimum of 20 per cent, as compared to traditional wired solutions.

The batteryless solution offers permanent availability, contributing to a greener environment and naturally eliminating the need for battery maintenance, re-charging and recycling costs.

Sundeep Singh, product manager at Schneider Electric comments: “The quality of the Harmony XB5R pushbutton, coupled with the worldwide experience of Schneider Electric as the global specialist in energy management, provides customers with the assurance of a product that combines both innovation and reliability.

“Suited perfectly to our customers’ needs, it enables considerable reduction in installation and maintenance costs which in turn increases productivity.”
