Mike Simpson of Philips looks at how lighting can enhance patient satisfaction, improve concentration and behaviour in schools and help the elderly care in homes.



Mike Simpson

Mike has been in the lighting profession for over 30 years in a variety of technical and design roles. He has worked with the professional institutions in developing lighting guides and codes and presented many papers on lighting technology and its application. He teaches on the MSc in Light and Architecture at the Bartlett and on the undergraduate lighting programme at Rose Bruford. In 1994/95 he was President of the Institution of Lighting Engineers and 2001/2002 was President of the Society of Light and Lighting and is immediate Past President of CIBSE. He is Technical &  Design Director for Philips Lighting UK.

Overview of Mark's Presentation

Since the discovery of the 3rd receptor in the eye we now understand far more about how light influences the human biological system. Research over the last 10 years has allowed us to use these effects in our lighting designs, resulting in an improvement in well being. The paper focuses on how this could affects lighting systems in Healthcare, Schools and for the elderly.
